A visit to Mt. Jerome Cementery

On our visit to Ireland in 2014, we had planned to find the resting places of our grandparents. We visited Glasnevin on the north side of Dublin and soon learned the Catholic's and protestant's don't mix, even after death, and were quickly told as they were from the church of Ireland they would probably be found in Mt. Jerome in South Dublin, which is where they are except one, Francis H jnr. The Cemetery dates back to 1836, so Francis and Jane are among the first 4 decades of users, with the cemetery expanding from 26 acres to 48 acres in 1874. The section where Francis and Jane are buried, B162 is part of the older part of the cemetery and they are interned in what is called a common grave. No head stone is present and there are 4 other bodies in the plot, not related. ( We are in the process of buying the grave rights which will give us the right to erect a head stone at a later date). Our other Grandparents, William and Kate are buried along with Kates grand Father and Great aunts just out from them at location B178, each section location would have about 80 grave plots, 20 across and 5 down A, B, C, D & E, with each grave holding up to 6 bodies. William and Kates grave has a Perpetuity number on it, 5007, which means it belongs to the family and cannot be resold or reused and at one time was maintained by the cemetery board. This ceased in 1972 when the cemetery went bankrupt and was sold to private investors.

Our other relatives, our great Aunts are buried in the newer part of the property at location B369 and B358, Amy and Harriot's grave is easy to locate as it still has a head stone but Aminia's and we think Dorothy's is hard to find as there is no head stone and on our first visit, in 2014, the ground was littered with broken head stones and grave mouldings. On our 2nd visit, in 2017, the ground was totally cleaned up and when we asked for location help we were told all of that area was cleaned and removed for OHS & liability reasons but he did give us a mud map of the location of the grave site from the cemetery records and at least we could find the bit of dirt where they lay.
