Laurie was born in 1914. Laurie's father is Neil V O'Loughlin and his mother was Mary Ethel Emery Butler. His maternal grandparents were James Patrick Butler and Mary Jane Gillen. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Tony, Brian, Moira, Sheila, Patricia, Betty, Philomena and Andrena. He is the second oldest of the nine children.
