Luke was born in 1890. Luke's father was Michael Meginess and his mother was Martha Bunter. His paternal grandparents were Patrick McGuinness and Jane Margaret Morgan. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Michael, Patrick, William Simmons, Donald Ralph, Sarah Jane, Elizabeth Ellen, Annie Regan and Mary. He is the fourth oldest of the nine children.
