William John was born in 1851 in Dundee, Angus, , Scotland. William John's father was Thomas McCreery and his mother was Catherine Adams. His paternal grandfather was Thomas McCreery and his paternal grandmother is Dorothea Johnstone. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Margaret, Ann, Sarah and Catherine. He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Marion Hope. He died at the age of 84 on May 17th, 1935.
