William was born in 1782 in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, , England.  William's father was George Manton and his mother was Susannah Clements.  His paternal grandfather was George Manton and his paternal grandmother is Jane Taylor. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, George, John, John, Charles, Francis, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.  He is the oldest of the nine children.
