Francis was born on December 5th, 1797 in Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, , England.  Francis' father was George Manton and his mother was Susannah Clements.  His paternal grandfather was George Manton and his paternal grandmother is Jane Taylor. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, William, George, John, John, Charles, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.  He is the second youngest of the nine children.
