Noel Wilfred was born in 1909 in Burwood, , New South Wales, Australia. Noel Wilfred's father was Charles Manton Keen and his mother was Maud Fishburn. His paternal grandparents were William Keen and Elizabeth Manton. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Jack Manton, Eric J, Allan Phillip, Daisy H, May P and Rose I. He is the youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Henry Charles, Florence Ada, Amy Hilda, May E, Alice M and Elizabeth Mabel.
