May P was born in 1899 in Burwood, , New South Wales, Australia. May P's father was Charles Manton Keen and her mother was Maud Fishburn. Her paternal grandparents were William Keen and Elizabeth Manton. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Jack Manton, Eric J, Allan Phillip, Noel Wilfred, Daisy H and Rose I. She is the third oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Henry Charles, Florence Ada, Amy Hilda, May E, Alice M and Elizabeth Mabel.
