Mary was born on June 30th, 1792 in Stow, Oxford, Maine, USA. Mary's father was William Keen and her mother was Mary Evans. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Keen and Alice Wells. She had five brothers and two sisters, named william, Charles, Samuel, Silas, Jonathon, Phoebe and Arabella. She is the second youngest of the eight children.
